Iowa State vs Texas Preview

Before we break down Saturday's game, let's take a look back to last year.
Prior to the game against Texas last year, the Cyclones were 3-4 with back-to-back blow out losses to #10 Utah and #6 Oklahoma. A beat up Iowa State team went down to Austin and outplayed and out coached the Longhorns, beating them 28-21.

This year, both Texas (3-0) and Iowa State (3-0) come in to this game with a lot to prove.

TEXAS
Case McCoy has stepped up as QB for Texas
The Longhorns have played three pretty easy non-conference games against Rice, BYU (Texas won 17-16), and UCLA. Head coach Mack Brown has been trying to find the right situation at quarterback and it appears he has finally found his man in Case McCoy (yes, Colt's younger brother). Garrett Gilbert (out) and David Ash have also seen playing time this year, but both have struggled. The Texas offense likes to spread the wealth and include many players in the offense. Take a look at their offensive numbers

The Cyclone defense will have to do its best to contain receivers Jaxon Shipley, D.J. Grant, and Mike Davis. The threat on the ground comes in Malcolm Brown who is averaging just over 5 yards per carry. Cody Johnson seems to be the goal line back for Texas with 4 TDs on only 15 carries. Fozzy Whittaker has also hit pay dirt three times. A lot of credit to Texas's crafty style of offense is given to former Boise State offensive coordinator, now the Texas OC, Bryan Harsin.

IOWA STATE
Steele Jantz has been the hero for Iowa State this season. The guy is a competitor. His performances in first quarters have been among the worst in college football. The fourth quarter is where he shines though. As long as he is winning games, there is nothing to complain about I guess. It would be nice to see a little more consistency out of a starting QB, but Jantz makes the plays when he needs to.
Do you feel the Steele?

The running game for Iowa State this season has seen some bright spots. Shontrelle Johnson, James White, and Jeff Woody have all seen a significant amount of touches this season and have all done pretty well. In a press conference this week, CPR said that Duran Hollis, a redshirt freshman from Texas, will also see some carries on Saturday.

The defense should have its hands full with the spread offense Texas runs. The team with the fewest penalties will more than likely walk away with the victory in this game. However, in Iowa State's last three games, the offense has turned the ball over a combined 10 times compared to the opponents combined 5. Iowa State can't shoot themselves in the foot against Texas and get away with it like they did against UNI and UCONN. Limit the turnovers and penalties. Play Iowa State tempo. That's what Iowa State needs to do to win this game.

The bye week came at a very good time for ISU because it allowed Jantz, Kelechi Osemele, and other injured Cyclones time to recover after they were banged up during the UCONN game. This is a very good match up and should make for an exciting game.

My prediction:

Iowa State  23
Texas          20

I think the Cyclones will pull this game off in the final seconds on a last second field goal. It would only be appropriate, right?

The game will be on FX at 6PM and Gus Johnson is calling it.

Jack Trice is sold out. Need I say more.

More good stuff

Bye Week Boredom....and its only Wednesday

Hawk Fans- bored yet?? Never fear, that's why 138 miles is here. Sure, there's a lull on campus during the bye week, but here's some fun Hawkeye related material to keep you entertained.

To continue my praise of James Vandenberg from last post, check out what ESPN Big Ten blogger Adam Rittenberg wrote regarding JVB in his joint post on Early Big Ten MVP candidates:

James VandenbergIt's hard not to give the offensive MVP to Wilson, but you're right, Wisconsin is 4-0 even without him. So many weapons on that offense. Robinson and Martinez also are good choices, but I'm going in a different direction. James Vandenberg. You know, the quarterback from Iowa? Through four games, his passing numbers are almost as impressive as Wilson's (1,095 pass yards, 10 TDs, 1 INT), and Iowa really has needed the junior to step up. Vandenberg's heroic performance in the historic comeback against Pitt might be the turning point of the season. If Iowa falls to 1-2, things really could start to snowball. Instead, the Hawkeyes are 3-1 entering the bye week and their quarterback is playing with a ton of confidence. The run game hasn't been nearly as consistent as Iowa thought it would be, and the Hawkeyes needed Vandenberg to be the player in games that they saw in practice last year.

Rittenberg usually gives some love to the Hawks, and he is definitely a fan of Vandenberg.

While Iowa's QB situation is working out nicely, our next opponent's situation is a mess. Penn State could not figure out their starting QB in camp, and apparently they still don't quite have it sorted out. Matt McGloin, who stepped up for the Nittany Lions last season, continues to produce, while original starter Rob Bolden remains on the team after threats to transfer during the off-season. Both quarterbacks have played significantly this year as "co-starters", with Bolden starting and McGloin coming off the bench. Here's the stat comparison:

PASSING GP Effic Cmp-Att-Int Pct Yards  TD Long Avg/G
Bolden, Rob  88.6 33-71-3 46.5 388 71 97.0
McGloin, Matt  146.8 34-54-0 63.0 421 41 105.2

McGloin seems to be a more productive passer, with a greater number of yards, TDs, and higher efficiency. However, Bolden has much more experience in big games, and recently led a game winning touchdown drive against Temple.

Former Hawkeye Adrian Clayborn sacking Penn State QB Rob Bolden

Well, that's enough for now on Penn State. I'll examine them much more next week.

Iowa Takes Care of Business

A 45-17 beatdown is exactly what Hawkeye fans expected to see Saturday at Kinnick. However, there were a few surprises. The offense came out in no huddle and marched down the field to score on the opening drive. Kevonte Martin-Manley proved that he will be a steady contributor, catching 6 balls for 82 yards. The coaching staff also began to experiment with personnel in the backfield, giving carries to Damon Bullock, Jordan Canzeri, and Jason White. Thomas Nardo was a force on the D line, earning B1G defensive player of the week honors by recording 12 tackles, 6 of those solo.
Of course, there were the expected results as well. Marvin McNutt again proved why he is a top receiver in the country, racking up 100 yards receiving and 2 TDs with ease. Marcus Coker pounded the defense on the ground as usual. Vandenberg looked solid, continuing his progression into the top tier of Big Ten QBs. The game may have been one-sided, but it was just what the Hawkeyes needed- more experience.

Lets look at some revealing statistics...

James Vandenberg is seriously turning into an elite passer in the Big Ten. Look at statistical leaders of QBs in the conference
PASSING AVG/GAMEClGComp-Att-IntPct.YardsTDLongAvg/G
1.Wilson, Russell-WISSR469 - 91 - 175.811361163284.0

10.Colter, Kain-NUSO339 - 60 - 165.0390127130.

Vandenberg is outperforming the much hyped Kirk Cousins, and is a very close second to Russell Wilson. It's still early, but Vandenberg could end up being a top Big Ten QB as a junior.

Marcus Coker rushed for 100 yards again on Saturday, which is somewhat surprising to those who watched the game. Coker doesn't always seem to have as much big play potential as other top backs, but he consistently pounds out yards, averaging 4.4 yards per carry and 95 yards per game. He currently ranks 4th in the Big Ten in rushing, although I expect his workload to lessen judging by the coaching staff's decision to include Damon Bullock and Jordan Canzeri in the offense on Saturday.

Who would have thought that Iowa's offense would have been so productive, while their defense would struggle so greatly? Typically it's the other way around, but this year has already proven itself to be unique (complete with a stadium flooding downpour, a triple OT loss, and the biggest comeback in school history). *Green for Greenwood was a success, with supporters wearing green being visible throughout the stadium.

 * As mentioned earlier, Thomas Nardo was awarded Big Ten defensive player of the week.
*With the bye week coming up, Iowa has 2 weeks to prepare for their away trip to Beaver Stadium to face Penn State

Not So Green..

As I watched the Iowa vs Louisiana-nobody game on Saturday, one thing caught my attention. I expected to see a stadium full of green for the "Green for Greenwood" game the Iowa fans were supposed to be supporting.

Iowa fans apparently didn't get the message to wear green
Photo by The Des Moines Register
Rather, I saw blotches of green throughout the stadium. Apparently not everybody got the message. I thought it looked very sloppy and awkward. I am calling out Hawkeye Nation. Come on guys. The intentions were great, but the outcome was rather poor. I'm not sure who organized it but they should have made it more public and got the university directly involved.

You guys have pulled of some sweet stadium colors before, like the black and gold sections last year. I was expecting a sea of green, but instead it looked like your stadium was a dead field with a bunch of random clumps of grass.

I'm not sure why I am talking about the Hawkeyes though. I'll leave that to Mr. Strohman. I guess I'm just a bored ISU fan during the bye week. I'll have a Texas preview for you guys this Friday.

Friday Pregame- Louisiana-Monroe

Its Friday! That means it's time to break down tomorrow's opponent, Louisiana-Monroe. This week four matchup should be no problem for the Hawks, but no game is easy. The Warhawk's dangerous passing attack will be good in-game experience for the young defense, especially the two safeties, Jordan Bernstine and Tanner Miller. Let's take a look at ULM....
Lousiana- Monroe Warhawks
Location: Monroe, LA
Enrollment:8,858
Conference: Sun Belt
Last Year: 5-7 record
Returning Starters: 23
Current Record: 1-2
Notable opponents: TCU and Florida State (lost to both)

Though they have a losing record, ULM poses some concerns for Iowa. The Warhawks run some spread sets, which allows them to run a lot of plays in a short amount of time. They have 101 passing attempt through three games this year (an average of 33 attempts per game), and averaged the same number of passing attempts per game last year. That ranked 48th in the nation. In comparison, Iowa was 82nd in the nation in passing attempts (44 less). ULM also had 473 rush attempts last year (49th in the nation), compared to Iowa's 449. Once again, Iowa will have to deal with a fast paced spread offense, however the talent level will undoubtedly be less than what the Hawks have seen so far. This will create a great opportunity for the new secondary to improve on stopping the spread before Big Ten play.

Alright, enough with the stats. Let's just take a look at this team from a fan's standpoint. ULM will not be intimidated by Iowa as other "cupcake" schools may be when they come into Kinnick Stadium. The Warhawks have already faced two top programs in TCU and Florida State, both on the road. ULM has faced the likes of Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, and Texas within the last decade. With these tough games under their belt, don't expect ULM to back down or feel pressured because they are playing a Big Ten team. If anything, ULM should come sprinting out of the gate, and the Hawks cannot look past this game. In the past, Iowa has generally taken care of business during the awkward fourth non-conference game. This game is usually reserved for a small program (teams like NIU, Miami OH, etc) , and intended to put a sure "W" on the team record. However, recall the 2007 loss to Western Michigan at home, and the 2009 scare against Arkansas State, and the importance of this game is quickly revealed. Sure, it's a test game, but a win is a win, and that win will add up come bowl season. The game also becomes more valuable when you consider the consequences of a loss...

Head Coach Kirk Ferentz mentioned this week that the Hawkeyes would be running their usual pro style offense, despite the amazing success of the no-huddle last week. A wise move by Coach Ferentz, despite much public outcry to shift Iowa's offense to a constant no-huddle even...brace for it...a spread..ugh. All I will say is this- Iowa has had so much success under Ferentz (5-3 bowl record, two BCS bowl appearances, 2 Big Ten championships) while running the same pro style offense since he began. Why change all of that because of a few games that didn't go our way? Sure, Iowa has the receiver talent this year to make their offense look like the Green Bay Packers, but Ferentz is making a wise move here. Stick to what has been successful, and use the no-huddle only when necessary. If our core offensive philosophy isn't working against Pitt, for example, then its time to let JVB loose. Until then, keep doing what Iowa does.

Prediction:
Iowa should run away with this one. Predicted score: Iowa 40, Louisiana-Monroe 14
Not sure what to expect as far as the rushing game. Damon Bullock was given play time at a critical point in last weeks win, so I'm guessing Ken O'Keefe and Ferentz are trying to give the freshman a chance. Coker will continue to pound the ball, but the Bullock-Coker combination could be helpful.
Also, expect McNutt to go off against a weak defense, and the athleticism of Shaun Prater and Micah Hyde should create some turnovers.

Pack the Jack!

A record number of season tickets have been sold for Iowa State football this year! Through Wednesday, the school had sold 37,446 season tickets and that number is still growing.

The opening two home games drew the second and fifth-largest crowds in Jack Trice Stadium history. I think anyone who has been to a game this year can vouch that there is a new atmosphere at The Jack.

There have already been 53,000 tickets sold for next weeks showdown against Texas. I'm guessing that game will be another sell out! This is how it should be every home game for ISU. According to Cyclones.com, the Cyclones' current home attendance average ranks 35th nationally.

Maybe it's time Jamie Pollard actually considered adding more seats to the stadium. How sick would this look?

Green for Greenwood

A year ago, former Iowa safety Brett Greenwood would have been fighting through the intense preparation of game week with the Iowa Hawkeye football team. This year, Greenwood has been fighting for his life, and Hawkeye fans plan to show their support this Saturday when the Iowa Hawkeyes take on Lousiana Monroe at Kinnick Stadium. Greenwood's recent situation has caused many Hawk fans to reflect upon the fact that football is just a game.

On September 9th, Greenwood collapsed during a workout at Pleasant Valley High School. Having been recently cut by the Steelers, Greenwood was working hard to get signed by another team. A bystander administered CPR, and Greenwood was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was placed in intensive care, and is now in a medically induced coma.  Here is a great article from the Daily Iowan on Greenwood's condition.

Last Wednesday was Greenwood's 24th birthday, and he remained at UIHC. Hawkeye fans on Twitter began an outpouring of sympathy for Greenwood, and a movement to "Wear Green for Greenwood" began. There is a Facebook group for "Wear Green for Greenwood," which currently consists of  over 4,000 members and is selling green #30 player tees (with the money going to the Greenwood family and/or charities). This Saturday, fans are encouraged to wear green into Kinnick Stadium to show their support for Brett as he recovers. Keep him in your prayers.

What We Have Learned About the Cyclones

How 'bout them Clones! I think I speak for all of Cyclone Nation when I say I never expected Iowa State to start off the season 3-0! Halfway to a bowl birth! It's insanity!

Steele Jantz lead the Cyclones to a 3OT win over Iowa
But really, should we be all that surprised? Iowa State has shown steady improvement the past two years under Coach Paul Rhoads, now in his third year as head coach.

In their first game, the Cyclones narrowly pulled off a win against in-state pest UNI.
Game two, most people know, ISU defeats Iowa in 3OT. A huge surprise to just about everybody. Including myself.
And last week the Cyclones pulled off their third consecutive come-from-behind win of the season over UCONN.

Luck? Maybe. Talent? Absolutely. Guts? You better believe it! This team has it all!

This Cyclone team appears to be the real deal. But is it really fair to hold this team in such high regards so soon? I think we will find out next week when the Clones take on conference enemy Texas at Jack Trice Stadium. Iowa State defeated Texas in Austin last year, so you better believe the Longhorns are hoping to stampede into Ames and "STEEL" a win from Jantz and the Cyclones. This year, this game holds high implications for both squads.

#20 Jake Knott has led the Cyclones on defense this season
Texas (3-0) has been shuffling quarterbacks like a deck of cards and seem like a somewhat confused program at the moment. Not to mention this whole conference reallignment fiasco Texas is in, but I digress. The Longhorns come in ranked #19 in the nation, but the Cyclones are right behind them. ISU (3-0) received 19 AP votes this week and 27 USA Today votes in the polls. A win over Texas would surely put them in to the Top 25 for the first time since the McCarney era. There is no doubt this program is headed in the right direction. And with a week to rest and think about next Saturdays contest, the Cyclones should like where they are sitting right now.

As a Cyclone fan and Iowa State student, 3-0 feels darn good right now! Bring on the Horns!

Coolest Hawkeye Video Ever

This new video from the UI office of admissions was recently released, and it is SICK! Saw it on my buddies Facebook page, and anyone who loves Hawkeye football will be pumped up by this. Gets nuts around 1:15

Observe....

Game for the Ages, and other fun tuesday stuff

WOW! I think that was the reaction of everybody in Kinnick Stadium last Saturday. Well, at least for the fans who didn't leave in the 3rd quarter when it appeared all hope was lost for 2011. That had to have been the biggest swing of emotions I have ever experienced at a football game. We all know the outcome by now, so lets just go through the numbers....

Score with 3:11 left in the 3rd quarter: Iowa 3, Pitt 24
Final Score: Iowa 31, Pitt 27

Keenan Davis dives for a 4th quarter TD catch

What happened in between?
Iowa went no huddle.....

  • James Vandenberg- 3 TD passes, 1 TD rush. 15-18 for 255 yds in the 4th quarter (144 yds in the first three quarters)
  • Interception by Micah Hyde
  • TD Catches by Keenan Davis and Kevonte Martin-Manley (2)
  • Iowa defense allowed 3 points, 0 in the 4th quarter

Check out the drive charts of Pitt and Iowa in the 4th quarter. Its almost as if there were two different teams on the field for the final quarter:

Team  Q   Time Obtained    Result          Plays/Yds  Time ended
IOWA4th   09:55       * TOUCHDOWN     7-73      2:14
IOWA 4th     06:19       * TOUCHDOWN 7-64 1:37
IOWA 4th   02:51       * TOUCHDOWN 7-64 1:31
IOWA 4th     00:00 Downs 4-3 1:41

PITT 4th    07:56    Downs         6-27       1:59
PITT 4th     04:22    Punt       3-5 1:57
PITT 4th     01:41    Interception        6-28 1:10
PITT 4th     00:00        End of half      0-0 0:00

Unbelieveable.

Along with the heroics, it was interesting to watch the secondary develop with Micah Hyde back at CB and Jordan Bernstine and Tanner Miller at the safety spots. They had some troubles, but overall the change looked promising. Also, freshman running back Damon Bullock got some reps. He could be a great compliment to Marcus Coker, and could also lessen the tremendous workload that Coker is carrying.

And how many Hawkeye fans were dubbing the season over?! I know I was definitely skeptical when the Hawks were down by 21 and the boos came down. Skeptical, yes. But it was (and still is) WAY too early to claim the sky is falling in Iowa City (ahem...friday's Daily Iowan..ahem). I was disappointed in the negativity. Yes, a loss to Iowa State is unexpected, and the early loss shoots down some high hopes. But it has happened before to Iowa teams, and has not been the end of the world- the 2001, 2002, and 2005 Hawkeye teams all lost to ISU and went on to a bowl game, even a BCS game in '02. ITS NOT OVER Hawk fans!!! Saturday's monumental comeback win proved that point better than ever.

Other notes:
Actor Ashton Kutcher shakes hands with fans in the first quarter against Pittsburgh on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.
  • Ashton Kutcher made an appearance at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday
  • Senior LB Bruce Davis officially left the team Monday. He still plans to graduate in December
  • James Vandenberg won B1G offensive Player of the Week for his performance Saturday
